WELCOME TO LOS MOCHIS AND THE COPPER CANYON!

The city of Los Mochis and the nearby port town of Topolobampo are two different destinations on Mexico's west coast, and the gateway towns to Mexico's famous mountain adventure Copper Canyon.

Los Mochis is an inland town of 300,000 residents that, while not a tourist destination, does offer much to the visitor. Topolobampo is located on the north shore of Bahia Ohuira, 15 miles southwest of Los Mochis. This is an active deep seaport and home to a rather large shrimp fleet and fishing operation.

Copper Canyon is one of Mexico's most spectacular adventures! The preferred way to enjoy this scenic wonderland is via the COPPER CANYON TRAIN, completed in 1961, which departs Los Mochis twice a day headed for Chihuahua.

The canyon is the result of more than 60 million years of erosion, and covers an area four times as large as the Grand Canyon in the United States. The train ride includes 39 bridges and 87 tunnels (one of which is over a mile long!), and at it's peak reaches an altitude of 8,056 feet above the Sea of Cortez. Actual canyon elevations run as high as 9,500 feet above sea level, while the surrounding mountains rise to over 12,000 feet! For more information on this incredible train ride drop by the TRAIN INFORMATION pages of the State Tourism web site.

Grab your mouse for an awesome scene of the train traveling in the Canyon AT NIGHT!

The Los Mochis ~ Topolobampo area was founded in 1893 by a Pennsylvania citizen who wanted to develop the area as a sugar cane plantation. Thanks to irrigation from the Rio Fuerte, in addition to sugar cane the agricultural production now includes mangos, cotton, wheat, rice, corn, tomatoes and large fields of marigold flowers.

Boaters might find Mexico's NAUTICAL LADDER plan interesting. The idea is to build marinas all around Baja and on the northern portion of the Mexico mainland.

Mainlanders interested in visiting BAJA from Los Mochis will appreciate the ferry that runs from the port in Topolobampo to LA PAZ in Baja California Sur. The beaches from La Paz to Los Cabos are some of the best in Mexico!

To purchase a good map of the Copper Canyon area visit the web site of MEXICO MAPS.

The web site of COPPER CANYON MEXICO is full of good information on the Copper Canyon area.

Looking to get oriented for your stay in the Los Mochis area? Drop by the Tourism and Information office behind the State Government building on Calle Allende. The train ride from Los Mochis through Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre) is one of Mexico's most spectacular natural wonders. Starting off in the lowlands of Mexico's west coast northwest of Los Mochis, the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway gradually moves north and east into the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains until it enters Barrancas del Cobre National Park. It ultimately crosses the Continental Divide before stopping at the city of Chihuahua. Often compared to the Grand Canyon in the United States, Cooper Canyon is actually deeper but not as long as it's neighbor to the north.

What makes Copper Canyon so inviting to many is it's accessibility. The train tracks actually lead down into parts of the canyon itself, and along much of the rim of the Canyon. The life of some of the Indians at the bottom of the canyon has changed little over the last few hundred years. LODGING is available in and around Copper Canyon for those who wish to make this a multi-day adventure.

For more information on the Copper Canyon area stop by the CHIHUAHUA STATE TOURISM OFFICE web site!

Los Mochis is approximately 20 miles from the Sea of Cortez. It tends to be more of a harbor town than a beach town, because of it's proximity to Bahia Ohuria and the port town of Topolobampo.

The best beaches near Los Mochis are southwest of the city, taking the dirt spur road west off of the road to Topolobampo.

The beach town of El Colorado can be reached by taking the road west of the airport all the way to the coast. Don't expect any tourist facilities.

If you are going to head into the water check out the current OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURE in Los Mochis.

For additional information on protecting your skin while enjoying the tropical Mexican sun take a look at the SUNSCREEN TIPS section of Mexico Expo.

Also, for the true beach adventurist, the fabulous beaches of BAJA CALIFORNIA await just across the Sea of Cortez!

  • ISLA FARALLON

    Located west of Los Mochis in the Sea of Cortez.
    Access via pangas at the Topolobampo harbor.

Los Mochis and Chihuahua are the main destination cities for tourists heading for Copper Canyon. There are also several hotels along the route within the Canyon area. Our hotel guide is broken down into three categories, one for each location.

Visitors look for RV or camping facilities should check out the Colinas Trailer Park next to the Colinas Hotel (telephone 011-52-681-1-8111), the Los Mochis Trailer Park (telephone 011-52-681-2-0021) and the Rio Fuerte Trailer Park (telephone 011-52-681-2-9686).

You think you came here to relax? Good luck!

DIVING * FISHING * GOLFING * HORSEBACK * KAYAKS

DIVING

The Sea of Cortez is very much alive in the waters west of Los Mochis. And once you get away from the harbor areas the visibility is usually good.

Water temperatures most of the year are in the 70's and low 80's, however in January, February and March wet suits are advisable as the water dips into the mid 60's at the surface. Thermoclines at depth can be even colder.

  • ISLA FARALLON

    Located west of Los Mochis in the Sea of Cortez.
    A striking rock of an island that rises up almost vertically from the Sea of Cortez. Plenty of sea life to enjoy!
    This is a boat dive, and access can be arranged at the harbor at Topolobampo.
    Check out the sea lion colony that lives and breeds on the island!

FISHING

Los Mochis' neighboring town of Topolobampo is a big fishing town. Although there is a large shrimping industry based in the harbor, there is also a lot of conventional fishing going on.

The harbor is not set up as a commercial fishing area for tourists, but hiring a panga or a cruiser for a day of fishing is not difficult. For best results head down to the main wharf area in Topolobampo the day before you want to go out. After asking around near the main fishing companies it won't take long to line up a boat and skipper for the following day.

For fresh water lake fishing east of Los Mochis contact FINATIC ADVENTURES at (800) 635-1902 or Hook Sportfishing at (800) 583-8133.

GOLF

Most of the golf courses in the Los Mochis area are on the other side of the Copper Canyon in Chihuahua. What a great reason to take the
Copper Canyon train!

KAYAKING

The Sea of Cortez has exploded with kayakers, and the calm waters west of Los Mochis are another great destination for dipping the paddle. The waters due west from town are the most remote. Taking the roads to El Colorado and to Bachonobampo north of town will provide the most remote kayaking.

SAILING

The huge natural harbor of Topolobampo is a good place to hole up during bad weather and to provision when supplies are low.

Sailing into port to take the Copper Canyon Train is an excellent idea to straighten out those sea legs, and a great way to add depth to a sea journey.

Boaters might find Mexico's NAUTICAL LADDER plan interesting. The idea is to build marinas all around Baja and on the northern portion of the Mexico mainland. Topolobampo is right in the middle of the action!

Sailors who do make it this far up the Sea of Cortez would do well to have a copy of MEXICO BOATING GUIDE by John and Pat Raines as well as CHARLIE'S CHARTS by Charles Wood. Both of these publications provide excellent information for cruising the coast of Mexico! GERRY CHARTS by good old Gerry is another option.

For boat permits and entry documents contact ROMERO'S MEXICO SERVICE.

Drop by THE LOG website for additional information on marina facilities in Mexico!

SURFING

Visit HORIZONS WEST for information on surf expeditions north of Puerto Vallarta.

Also located on the mainland north of P.V. is COSTA AZUL surf resort, a great place for surfers looking for a relaxed surfing environment.

Drop in on the web site of SURFARIMEX for additional information on surf tours into Mexico!

SIESTAS & OLAS is a very fun film about surfing Mexico. The action in the film starts off with epic Baja at Scorpion Bay, and then transitions to the awesome sliders and bone crunchers of mainland Mexico. The film was produced by Dan-O Surf Films in Santa Barbara, California (by Dan Wosniak), and can be purchased on video and DVD at your local surf shop or by visiting their web site. See it and feel good.

And for a good time on-line drop your Sex Wax and check out the Reef Brazil girls at the REEF web site.

SWELL.COM always has good stuff to check out when you can't go surfing and need your fix.

Leave your wet suit at home and grab your rash guard. The OCEAN TEMPERATURES in Mexico are nice all year long!

WINDSURFING

The Sea of Cortez west of Los Mochis is usually calm in the morning, and the wind usually picks up in the afternoon. The area receives the same general northwest wind pattern as LOS BARRILES and BUENA VISTA, famous for windsurfing right across the Sea of Cortez on the Baja Peninsula.

The best place for windsurfing near Los Mochis is north of the Toplobampo harbor, accessed by a dirt road west of Los Mochis.

    • Carlos;

      I have heard that there can be chickens and such on the Copper Canyon train from Los Mochis to Chihuahua. Is there another train without livestock? ~ Beth

      Beth;

      Small animals are indeed allowed on the Second Class trains through Copper Canyon, which is just one more reason why you probably want to spend the extra $15 to get the First Class tickets. The first class trains also offer more comfortable seating and bathrooms. Remember, for you this is a vacation, but for the local people this is the way to get from Los Mochis to Chihuahua. ~ Carlos Fiesta

    • Carlos;

      Looking at a map my girlfriend and I are excited about the possibility of catching the ferry out of Los Mochis to head over to Baja for a few days. Is that feasible? ~ Robert.

      Robert;

      Absolutely! The ferry terminal is actually in the harbor at Topolobampo, about 20 miles from Los Mochis. The ferry leaves in the morning and usually takes about 10 hours to arrive in La Paz. There are several different categories of tickets on the ferry, so pick the cost that works best for you. The ferry terminal in La Paz is about a 12 minute cab ride from the center of La Paz, which is right on the Sea of Cortez. For more information on La Paz check out the LA PAZ section of Mexico Expo. Also keep in mind that when you are in La Paz you are only one hour from the artist village of TODOS SANTOS and less than 2 hours from CABO SAN LUCAS! ~ Carlos Fiesta

    • Carlos;

      Are there any great places for snorkeling in the large bay at Topolobampo? ~ Gesi

      Gesi:

      The huge bay at Topolobampo is an active place for shrimp and fishing boats, but there are no great snorkeling areas for tourists. If you are interested in snorkeling in crystal clear water you might want to check out El Farallon, an island about 17 miles off the beach west of Los Mochis. In addition to the sea life, there are thousands of birds that migrate to this island each year. Pangas can be rented in Topolobampo harbor. ~ Carlos Fiesta

    • Carlos;

      We are considering getting off the Copper Canyon train and doing some hiking into the bottom of the valley. Is there a way to get down to the bottom? ~ Hauns

      Hauns;

      There are several villages along the Copper Canyon route that offer transportation to the bottom. These are usually old school buses that miraculously trudge the dirt roads to the bottom. The fees vary, but are not expensive. For more information check with one of the TOUR OPERATORS who specialize in these trips. ~ Carlos Fiesta

      Carlos;

      Part of our traveling plans includes cashing in Traveler's Checks in Chihuahua. Are banks readily available there? ~ Amy

      Amy;

      Chihuahua is a very large town and offers almost any service you will need, including banks. Be advised that in many parts of Mexico the banks can be quite busy with merchant activity in the morning, and then things taper down in the afternoon. ATM machines are also available, but they pay out their jackpots in pesos, not dollars. ~ Carlos Fiesta.
