WELCOME TO COZUMEL!
Cozumel is Mexico's version of a Caribbean island getaway! However, unlike most Caribbean islands, Cozumel is relatively easy to get to. Jet lag is usually not a problem, as Cozumel is located in the Central Time Zone. Even though Cozumel is just a 25 minute puddle-jump from the resort of Cancun and a 9 mile ferry ride from Playa del Carmen on the mainland, it is a million miles away from the glitz and glamour of it's westerly neighbors. Cozumel, the 29 mile long "Island of the Swallows" offers the laid-back pace often associated with vacationing in Mexico. Even at it's current population of 50,000 souls Cozumel has maintained it's small island feeling.
Cozumel was a Mayan trading center for hundreds of years. The Spanish used the island as a base during the early part of the fifteenth century, and pirates and smugglers used it's coves as hideouts from 1600 AD through the 1700's. By the 1800's the island was practically abandoned. Although a resident population began to grow during the 1900's, it took scuba diver Jacques Cousteau to put Cozumel back on the map in 1961 when he stated that Palancar and the surrounding reefs were some of the most beautiful on the planet.

The only town on Cozumel is San Miguel, and the rest of the island is relatively empty. San Miguel is a fairly good sized oceanfront town, and you can find pretty much whatever you need in it's downtown and waterfront streets.
Most of the development growth on Cozumel, and there is very little to speak of when compared to most Mexican resorts, is located on the west side of the island just up and down the coast from San Miguel. Hotels, restaurants, shopping (and dive shops!) have evolved on this end of the island because this is the side of the island that offers the calm waters and spectacular reef system that provides world class diving.
The east side of the island is sparsely populated, and a favorite excursion for visitors who have the urge to explore the island. A few small beachfront restaurants make this "backside" of Cozumel a great loop trip, with fun stops for lunch and swimming in the warm waters along the way!
Cozumel offers a diverse range of accommodations, from oceanfront resorts and condos to downtown hotels. Most of the hotels located on the water are very nice, and usually somewhat expensive. The hotels downtown are smaller and more affordable, and usually a short walk to the beach.
Diving is the reason many visitors choose Cozumel as a vacation destination. The reef system is one of the best in the world with excellent visibility, warm water, and plenty of sea life all year long. Getting in 2 to 3 dives a day is common, and the night diving is spectacular! The ocean currents that flow between Cozumel and the mainland provide more than just a good supply of nutrients. This flow is what creates Cozumel's famous "drift diving", where divers effortlessly cruise with the underwater currents at 2 to 3 knots along the reefs, watching the world of coral and sealife along the way. It is truly an amazing experience!
Shopping is becoming more popular in Cozumel, and wandering the downtown streets of San Miguel is getting better each year. There are dozens of small stores located throughout town, and most of the hotels also have shops and boutiques.
The nightlife in Cozumel is surprisingly active! Most of the bars and discos in town are located near the oceanfront Malecon, and do a great job of entertaining visitors and residents looking for some excitement. Being overserved is not uncommon.
Cozumel is one of Mexico's special little surprises. Most of the people who visit the island return again and again. It's just too much fun to visit only once!

After you unpack your bags, it's time to get your bearings straight. Head down to downtown San Miguel along the waterfront. After a brief walk along the Malecon, grab an ocean view table at one of the open-air restaurants right across from the ocean. It's a good place to get settled in, and having a cold drink over a warm map of the island is a great way to plan your upcoming adventures!
After exploring downtown San Miguel, you might wonder what else Cozumel has to offer the adventurous visitor. A Circle Tour around the island in a rental car or Moped is always a fun getaway. Be sure to stop at one of the restaurants on the remote east side for lunch at a palapa restaurant on the sand!
Cozumel has great beaches, both on the west (leeward) side as well as the east (windward) side. Because of the prevailing winds, the beaches on these two sides of the island are very different.
Most of the beach action is on the west side of the island, for 2 reasons. The western beaches are closer to the hotel areas, and the western beaches are usually free of winds all day. These beaches are great for swimming, snorkeling, and of course diving.
The beaches on the east side of the island are very dramatic. Beautiful white sand offset by low lying limestone cliffs, and a sea of whitecaps from the stronger prevailing winds. A couple of small restaurants make these east side beaches paradise, especially before mid-day when the winds pick up.
Looking for a huge beach with plenty of white sand in all directions and perfectly clear water? Take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen. Beaches don't get any better than this!
Remember, just like the rest of Mexico, all of the beaches in Cozumel are open to the public. Just be sure not to trample the private property on your way to the beach!

The beaches on the west side of Cozumel are not only convenient to most
of the hotels on the island, they are also extremely beautiful. White sand,
calm clear water...this is about as close to water paradise as you can get!

EAST SIDE BEACHES
Cozumel's east side beaches are also spectacular, in their own rugged way. Sandy coves and alternating limestone cliffs provide a beautiful contrast. A few small restaurants right on the sand make the east side beaches a favorite for lunch excursions. From north to south:

The hotels in Cozumel are located on the west side of the island, both north and south of the island's only town, San Miguel. Most of these hotels are located right on the water, although there are a few that are located on the inland side of the coastal highway. Although all of the hotels accommodate divers, some of these hotels go even further and market themselves as 'dive resorts'. For divers the advantage of these hotels is a well proven and streamline process of getting out to the reefs in a fast and efficient manner. Although non-divers are also welcome at these hotels, be prepared to hear a large selection of dive stories while relaxing in the Jacuzzi with your Pina Colada!

There are many great hotels in Cozumel, no question about that. But when given the choice, Carlos Fiesta recommends the Plaza Las Glorias Cozumel. One of the great features of this oceanfront hotel is it's proximity to all of the action in downtown San Miguel. The short walk to downtown restaurants, shops and nightlife is hard to find in a first class hotel on the island. Yes, there are probably more elaborate hotels in Cozumel, but the layout of this hotel, combined with good service, awesome ocean views, and the great location make this special hotel a top contender.
For a more relaxed hotel for couples and families Carlos recommends the Presidente Inter-Continental about 15 minutes south of town. This is the perfect place to get away from it all.

Cozumel is a fun tropical island, and there are plenty of diversions available to keep you busy once you have had enough of laying by the pool.
Although the scuba diving is spectacular here, there's a whole lot more going on here than blowing bubbles. Snorkeling, fishing, kayaking...the list goes on. You want to ride a horse? Grab a carrot and let's go!

Cozumel is the number one diving destination in Mexico! And it doesn't
take a rocket scientist to figure out why. 100 to 200 feet visibility,
warm water (75-85 degrees!), exceptional sea life and friendly locals all play
a part in the formula.
The reefs at Cozumel are the northern portion of the Belizean Reef, which
is one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. Heading south from Isla
Mujeres just north of Cozueml, this reef is approximately 174 miles long, and
finally ends in the Bay of Honduras, south of Belize.
Cozumel is "drift diving" at it's best. The Guiana Current usually comes to
the island from the south and flushes to the north along the west side of the
island. Although the current can get swift at times, it usually runs at a
comfortable 1 to 2 knots. Just go to depth, set up your BC for neutral buoyancy,
and watch the wonderful world of underwater Cozumel cruise past your mask! The
captain of your boat will be following your bubbles to the pick-up point.
Those who have not had a chance to dive Cozumel recently will be pleasantly
surprised with the easier access to the reefs. For years the reefs were accessed
by large slow boats, and getting to the drop-off location easily took an hour
or more. Today, fast boats slip up to the drop off locations in about half the
time, which adds to the pleasure of the whole diving experience.
Package tours are a common way to book a vacation to Cozumel. In addition,
many hotels offer dive packages. For those who want to 'wing it' equipment
rentals, instructions, and dive trips can be arranges on site.
Safe diving is strongly suggested. With the super-clear water it can be easy
to get distracted or not realize how deep you are or how long you have been down.
In the event of an emergency, the island has a decompression chamber on Calle 5 Sur,
telephone 011-52 (987) 2-2387. Check with your dive master to make sure the
company you are diving with has an affiliation to the chamber.
Most dive masters set up their trips as a two dive day. The first dive is usually
the deep dive, followed by lunch and then a shallower dive usually less than 60 feet.
A safety stop at 15 feet is strongly encouraged on the way back up after each dive.
Friendly marine life in Cozumel waters include various types of Angelfish,
Baloonfish, Cowfish, Longsnout Sea Horse, Trumpetfish, Spotted Drum, Splendid Toadfish,
Rock Whitespotted Filefish, Rock Mantis Shrimp, Christmas Tree Tube Worms, Hermit Crabs,
Reef Squid and Rough File Clams. Marine life to keep your distance from include Bristle
Worms, Fire Coral, Eels, Spiny Sea Urchins, Spotted Scorpionfish, Yellow Stingrays
and drunken college girls at Carlos 'n Charlie's.

Contacting a dive shop in advance is usually not necessary, although it is not a bad idea. If you come into town without any dive reservations, you may have to adapt to the timeframe of the dive companies that have openings. If you have booked a dive package with a dive service before arriving in Cozumel you will not need to make any dive trip reservations. Most boats depart for their first dive by 9:00 a.m.For those who are interested in night diving, last minute bookings are usually available, although it may not be with the same company that is providing your day dives.
Even though Cozumel is set up as a boat dive destination, don't be afraid to rent a car (or take a taxi), fill up a couple of tanks, and head to a reef near shore. Go have fun ... you're on vacation!

Located at the very south end of the island.
Depth: 80 to 130 feet (18-39 meters).

Located at the south end of the island, just before Maracaibo reef.

FISHING
The waters off of Cozumel offer excellent fishing! Although the fishing is good
all year long, fishing for sailfish from March through June is particularly
rewarding. The International Spearfish Tournament is held here each year in May,
and the trophies are the proof of the pudding. In addition to Marlin, these
waters are home to dorado, wahoo, red snapper and much more!
Most of the hotels on the island can hook you up (get it?) with a fishing
boat, or you can try the companies listed below.
Many of the companies that offer fishing trips out of Cozumel are also dive
companies. These folks know the local waters very well and your chances for
tight lines is pretty good.

KAYAKING
The clear and warm waters surrounding Cozumel are spectacular for kayaking!
Even though the prevailing currents run from south to north, close to shore
the currents are usually not noticeable.
Cozumel's west side gets most of the kayak attention because it is
usually calm all day and the coastline is truly spectacular. The west
side is also closer to all of the hotels, and launching is easy from almost
any beach. A short kayak excursion for lunch to San Francisco Beach or to
Playa del Sol is the perfect place to drop the paddles and take a break.
Also, kayaking to the reefs off of Chankanaab Park for snorkeling is a good
destination.
For a real adventure, the east side of the island offers equally incredible
scenery, but the wind usually picks up in the afternoon. So getting
an early start for an east side excursion is a good idea. Restaurants
along this rugged stretch of coast make taking a paddle break an enjoyable
experience!
For kayakers who really want to get away from it all, the north side of
the island is uninhabited. Launching is from the end of the dirt road on the west
side, and from the dirt road to Punta Molas on the east side.
Whichever route you take it is advisable to bring along a mask
and snorkel!

MOPEDS
In Cozumel Mopeds are more than just a good way to get around the island. They are
also a great way to have fun! Hopping around the west side of the island is easy,
such as a jaunt to San Francisco beach for lunch or to Chankanaab Park for a snorkel
adventure.
For those who feel comfortable on these small motorized bikes, a "circle tour" of
the island is also a lot of fun, stopping on the east side of the island for lunch
on a beautiful beach. Wearing a helmet is a good way to make sure that you don't
leave an empty seat on the plane ride home.
SNORKELING
You don't have to be a scuba diver to enjoy the underwater wonders of Cozumel.
There are several great snorkeling spots that offer good visibility and plenty to see.
Some of the best places to snorkel include much of the west coast, Chankanaab National
Park, and Cardona Reef towards the south end.
The water is usually warm in Cozumel, so a wet suit is not necessary.
However a light rash-guard will help keep the chill off for extended snorkel
adventures, with the added benefit of protection against coral scrapes.

If you are a racquet head, there is no need to fall off your game while on vacation
in Cozumel. Although there are no clubs set up just for tennis on the island, several
of the hotels do offer tennis courts.
As with many Caribbean destinations, it's best to get your tennis game going
before it gets too hot. If you are on a dive trip, you will probably be diving

The dining venues on Cozumel are easy to figure out. You are either going to eat at your hotel (not recommended for more than one or two meals) or you are going to sample the local fare of Cozumel. Since dining is half the fun of any trip to Cozumel, we recommend you eat around as much as possible.
Most of the restaurants in Cozumel are in and around San Miguel, although there are a few other options out of town. Seafood is a favorite, although you can expect to find everything else from tacos to T-bones in the various eateries.
Like most places in the world, tipping for good food or service is appreciated on Cozumel. However, the percentage of the tip is generally less in Mexico than in the United States. A 10% tip is considered normal, but don't be afraid to leave a bigger tip if your waiter has done an above average job of making your meal a great experience.

If you want to drink, dance and get stupid, Cozumel has a place for you to do it. Remember, the legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 years old, so the chances are good they you may run into inexperienced drinkers. Give them a wide berth!

Cozumel offers a very good selection of stores for shopping, and visitors will find everything from sombreros to ceramics, and a whole lot more. Shops lining the main oceanfront street, Avenida Rafael Melgar, offer the most convenience and a great shopping atmosphere. Bargain hunters may want to head inland a few streets for better prices.
Most of the larger hotels have shops and boutiques, but don't expect any price discounts this close to your room. These hotel shops are very convenient for essentials like chap-stick and visors, or a magazine to read on the beach.
Visitors looking for a serious shopping venue might consider a short hop across the pond to CANCUN or Isla Mujeres. Both of these towns offer shopping on a professional level, and make a good excuse for a one day excursion!
Since Cozumel is a duty free port, prices on many items are relatively attractive. Items imported to Cozumel may not be such a bargain.
Most of the larger shops accept credit cards, and all of the shops accept U.S. dollars. Although some degree of negotiating is possible in some of the shops, especially during slower times, as a general rule the nicer the shopping establishment is the less they are going to want to negotiate with you.
Many of Cozumel's businesses observe the traditional Mexican siesta during the heat of the day, so you may encounter a few closed shops between 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (unless the cruise ships are in town!).

Not only is Cozumel easy to get to, but once you get there it is easy to figure out how to get around. Just think of the layout of the main roads on the island as the letter "b" and there you have it.
The names of the roads in town begin with either "Avenida" (running north and south) or "Calle" (running east and west). All Mexican towns should be laid out this way!
The road that runs along the west coast of the island (the left side of the letter "b") is the islands longest and most traveled road. It is called Avenida Rafael Melgar as it hugs the cost in the downtown San Miguel area, and changes names to Costa Sur as it heads south from town to follow the coast.
The main east-west road that divides town is called Benito Juarez. It cuts across the island to the east side, and changes names to Carretera Transversal as soon as it leaves the town boundary.
There is only one gas station on the island, and that seems to be sufficient for the needs of the locals and tourists. Plan on spending about $2.75 U.S. per gallon for the island version of Pemex.

AIRLINES
Cozumel International Airport is a pretty small place, and easy to get in and out of.
It is located about 2 miles north of San Miguel, a quick 10 to 20 minute ride to most
of the hotels on the island. Although there are usually no taxis available at the
airport, the shuttle van "collectivos" are available to wisk you to your hotel.
Visitors to Cozumel will need proof of citizenship (such as a passport or certified
birth certificate and also a valid Tourist Card. For further information on entry

Letting the luggage porters carry your heavy baggage from the airport terminal
to your mode of transportation is a good way to promote a respectable work ethic,

Taking a cruise around the island is always fun, and renting a car or scooter is
the most common way to take the tour. As far as rental cars go, don't expect a huge
selection. There are a few small compacts available, and the open-top Jeep is always
an island favorite!
The island only has one gasoline station, a Pemex station located downtown
on the corner of Benito Juarez and 30th Avenue. If you don't like the gas prices here
you can go to the next nearest station in Playa del Carmen!
To rent a car most rental companies want to see your driver's license, a major credit
cars and possibly your passport. Check with your insurance carrier at home about
necessary coverage for rental cars. Collision insurance is available on the island for
a daily rate.

MOPEDS
Mopeds are a popular and inexpensive way to hop around Cozumel. Although they are a great way to see the western part of the island, they are not recommended for the complete 'circle tour' of the island (rent a Jeep for that!). It is strongly advised that a helmet be used when riding on a Moped. A short ride up the coast to San Francisco Beach is a great Moped destination!
TAXIS
Taxis are a good way to get from the hotels to downtown San Miguel for shopping, dinner or dancing, and to get to the airport (although they are not available from the airport to the hotel zone...go figure). Although most of the cab drivers in Cozumel are cool dudes, it's always a good idea to set the price to your destination before you get inside the cab.
Taxis can almost always be found in front of the major hotels and on the main streets in San Miguel. They are also available at Chankanaab Lagoon and at San Francisco beach.
Hiring a cab to take the grand tour of the island is also a great idea. And if you want to stop for a cold beer and nachos at one of the oceanfront palapa restaurants as you head around the island, the cab drivers will usually accommodate you!

Most Taxis in Cozumel try to keep a limit of 5 passengers per cab (by law), but exceptions can prevail.
TOURS
If it's your first trip to Cozumel, and you want to learn a little more about the island,
hooking up with a tour company who knows the island can be a good idea.
These companies are also good with groups, and can make a big different in getting and
showing people the best parts of the island.
If you are touring on your own be sure to stop by the "Museum of the Island of Cozumel". It is interesting and can be a great way to kill time while waiting you your flight or ferry.

CHANKANAAB LAGOON
Located 5 miles south of San Miguel, on the west coast of Cozumel and the west side of the coastal highway.
The name "Chankanaab" means "little sea" which describes the small clear inland lagoon (cenote) with limestone caves that connect to the ocean.
In addition to the lagoon there is a protected bay, sandy beach, and an offshore reef, all part of a National Park called Parque Chankanaab.
Chankanaab is a sanctuary for a variety of marine life plus a surrounding botanical garden with over 300 tropical plants, lots of birds and a small museum.
Dive shop, snorkel equipment rentals, restrooms, showers, restaurant with cold drinks, snacks and meals are available.
Keep your eyes open for giant wandering (friendly) iguanas!

Castillo Real Ruins are located on the northeast section of the island, on a dirt road. The remote location is as interesting as the ruins.
Four wheel drive is recommended, especially after it has rained.San Gervasio Ruins are located north of the cross-island road at the sign, then 4 miles north. Open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, pathways connect stone temples and shrines in various states of disrepair. Cold drinks and snacks are usually available, and a small fee ($5) is usually charged for admission to the road.
El Cedral Ruins are located ten miles south of San Miguel, east of the highway sign. This site consists of one small structure, and is believed to be the oldest of Cozumel's ruins. A good stop over on the way to San Francisco beach for cocktails.
One of the nice things about Cozumel is that it is an island, and that it is pretty remote. However, once across the channel, there are several great places to visit.
The best way to get to the mainland in via the ferry, which cross the channel in both directions every hour or so. Once you hit the pier in Playa del Carmen, your have plenty of options!

CANCUN
Cancun is one of the most popular vacation destinations on the planet. And it just happens to be less than 60 miles away from Cozumel! Travelers to Cozumel who have a desire to check out Cancun would do well to consider a hop across to the mainland to spend a day or two in Cancun. Beautiful beaches, restaurants, shopping, a host of recreational opportunities and non-stop nightlife make Cancun a hard place to leave for anyone who likes to be entertained.
Cozumel visitors who have the time will enjoy taking the ferry across from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen, and then taking a rental car or Taxi an hour north to Cancun. For people with more money than time, daily flights are available from Cozumel Airport to Cancun airport. Flight time is about 20 minutes.

ISLA MUJERES
Located directly north of Cozumel in the waters 8 miles east of Cancun and 45 miles north of Cozumel, Isla Mujeres is a great island destination for those who want to experience something different, but who are not ready for all of the action in Cancun. Although no longer a 'sleepy' island, Isla Cozumel (population 15,000) is several notches slower that Cancun, and a great place to spend a day. Isla Mujeres is famous for it's shopping...block after block of cute shops and boutiques! Dining is also a fun option here, and there are several eateries right on the beach. A ride around the five mile long island on a Moped only takes an hour or two, depending on how often you stop to enjoy the great views.
Getting to Isla Mujeres from Cozumel is pretty simple. Either hop over to the mainland and take a cab up to Puerto Juarez just north Cancun, or catch a plane from Aero Caribe at Cozumel airport. Either way your trip to the "Island of Women" will be a fun excursion!
ISLA CONTOY
Isla Contoy is an uninhabited island north of Isla Mujeres that caters to visitors who want to get in touch with nature. The island offers flora and fauna that cannot be found in Cozumel, Cancun or Isla Mujeres, and is a wonderful place to experience the 'pre-tourist' Yucatan island life.
Exotic birds are the big deal here, and Isla Contoy's primary function is as a bird sanctuary. If you like birds, you'll love Isla Contoy!
There are several companies that offer excursions from Cancun to Isla Contoy, and it is best to make reservations in advance.
PLAYA DEL CARMEN
Playa del Carmen is Cozumel's closest neighbor, located on the mainland just 9 miles west of Cozumel. It has evolved from a sleepy coastal village who's main claim to fame was as a jump-over point to Cozumel to a destination resort all on it's own. Many of the visitors to Playa del Carmen today are still in transit up or down the coast, or over to Cozueml. And most of these travelers make the same mistake...not allowing enough time to fully appreciate this delicious Caribbean town. Great restaurants, small stores, and spectacular beaches set in a slow pace make this town a jewel on Mexico's Yucatan Coast.
Getting to Playa del Carmen couldn't be easier. The ferry leaves Cozumel just south of San Miguel approximately once every hour. Enjoy!

Listen, Carlos Fiesta is the last person who wants to cram a little culture down your throat, but take a tip here. If you have any extra time on your trip to Cozumel and any desire to check out a taste of the Mayan culture, Tulum is the hot tip. Unlike most of the Mayan ruins on the Yucatan that are inland and a real excursion to get to, Tulum is on the beach and a slam-dunk to get to. Hiring a local guide to explain your walk through the 60 ruins is a great idea, and will cost you less than the price of a couple of gallons of gasoline back home. Just do it!
Getting to Tulum is half the fun! Simply pop across the channel on a ferry to the land, grab a cab in Playa del Carmen and 15 minutes later you are there!
XEL-HA
Xel-Ha is one of the Yucatan Peninsulas true treasures. Located along the Mexican coast about 25 miles south west of Cozumel, Xel-Ha is a nature made collection of crystal clear bays, lagoons, natural wells and caves which are fed from the sea and mixed with underground fresh water. It has been called the largest natural aquarium in the world, and is a wonderful place to swim, snorkel and be generally non-productive. It's a good place for a lunch stop or an all day adventure!
To get to Xel-Ha from Cozumel simply take the ferry across to Playa del Carmen, and then take a Taxi south 20 minutes to the park.

XCARET
Located on the mainland just north of Playa del Carmen, Xcaret is like "Disneyland does Yucatan". This is a theme park with a slant towards nature and water, featuring a large crystal clear lagoon, an underground river, and acres and acres of surrounding jungle. Fun things to do include rafting down a river through caves, snorkeling, laying on the beach, swimming with the dolphins, having a lagoon-side lunch and much more!
Xcaret can be reached from Cozumel by taking the ferry to the mainland and then taking a Taxi 20 minutes north to the park.
Most of the larger hotels in Cozumel have in-room phones. Be sure to check, however, how much the hotel charges for a service fee to use the phones.
The most affordable way to phone home from Cozumel is to use your ATT calling card. Be sure to obtain the necessary access numbers and PIN numbers before leaving home.

Absolutely! Especially if you are going for just a few day, you'll find plenty of things to do. Even though Cozumel is a great diving destination, a large percentage of it's visitors are not divers. I have been hearing about Cozumel's 'drift diving' and I am not quiet sure what to expect. I have had many great open water dives, but I have experienced currents only occasionally. How fast are these currents? ~ Gail

Drift diving is a piece of cake. I have gone scuba diving in many different water environments, and I love Cozumel's drift diving. Although the speed of the currents can change, they usually run around 1 to 2 knots which is a relatively mild pace. There are times when they run a bit faster, depending on local conditions. The local dive masters keep a keen eye on the currents...they hate to loose paying customers to the open sea, it's bad for business. The currents usually run from south to north, so most boat drop offs start towards the south end of the island, they follow your bubbles as you slowly cruise north, and then pick you up further north. You heard right. There are a few ruins on Cozumel but they tend to be...ahh... ruined. Seems the early European visitors to Cozumel had little appreciation for the local culture and damaged or destroyed much of what was there. If you are considering checking out some of the local ruins, hop the ferry over to Playa del Carmen, and then take a taxi down the coast to Tulum. Now there's some ruins for you! ~ Carlos Fiesta

On a dive trip should I be concerned about flying at altitude in a commercial airline after deep diving? ~ Mike

It is definitely something to consider. Even though most airliners are pressurized at a level below their cruising altitude of 32,000 to 35,000 feet, the cabin pressure can still be high enough to cause problems for divers. It's a good idea to do your deeper dives during the first part of your trip, and then shallow dives the day before your departure. Most divers do not dive on the day they are flying out. The last day tends to be a good day to ride around the island or to go shopping. ~ Carlos Fiesta

Most people who do it think so. Especially in the clear and warm waters of Cozumel. Diving at night with a good light is a very special experience. Scary? Maybe a little, but only at first. Soon you get comfortable with the idea and begin to appreciate how you are focusing on the object in your light, and not distracted by anything else in the area, like in daytime diving. The colors of the coral and fish seem awesome. I'd say you gotta do it just once! ~ Carlos Fiesta

Years ago it was not uncommon for travelers to Mexico to get 'Montezuma's Revenge' by drinking the water. This was more common in mainland Mexico than in the Baja or the Yucatan Peninsula. Mexico has cleaned up it's water supplies considerably over the last 10 years, and getting sick in Mexico is now the exception. The best way to stay healthy while vacationing in Mexico is to to everything in m-o-d-e-r-a-t-i-o-n. Too much sun, cocktails, spicy food and lack of sleep can really wear a body down ~ Carlos Fiesta

The temperature of the water off of Cozumel varies with the seasons, but generally runs as low as 77 degrees in winter and as high as 85 degrees in summer. You've got to be a pretty big panzy to get cold in water that warm! ~ Carlos Fiesta
Cozumel has very good weather all year long. The climate is warm and dry most of the time, with the possibility of brief afternoon showers from June though September.
Because it is so close to mainland Mexico, Cozumel's climate is more continental, and less like most islands further out to sea. This mainland influence gives Cozumel warmer days and nights than most Caribbean islands.
Since it is located in the Tropics, it is possible for Cozumel to experience Chubascos (hurricanes) during the summer months when the Caribbean water temperatures are at their warmest. These storms usually only last a day or two, but they can be fierce if they hit the island directly.
Evenings in Cozumel are pleasant, although a light sweater or jacket might come in handy late in the evening during December, January and February.
